Alongside your GP, Balerno Pharmacy plays an important healthcare role in your local community.

All our Pharmacists are trained and qualified to treat many minor ailments saving you valuable time and freeing up local Doctor surgeries so that those patients with more serious illnesses can be seen more quickly.

And the great news is that when Balerno Pharmacy treats your minor ailment you don’t even need to book an appointment – just come to the pharmacy and ask to speak to the Pharmacist. Within a few minutes, you will be advised if the minor ailment affecting you, can be treated free under the Minor Ailment Scheme.

  • Diarrhoea
  • Head Lice
  • Threadworms
  • Ear Wax
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Acute pain relief
  • Eye infections
  • Minor skin conditions

 

People who were exempt from prescriptions before free prescriptions were introduced – e.g. over 60s, under 16s, pregnant women, people on income support etc – can be treated without incurring any costs for medication provided – we will however require you to provide the normal proof of your exemption.

If you are not exempt you will only be asked to pay the retail price of the medication you receive. We do not charge you for the consultation and not all consultations will result in a prescription.

Whilst in most cases the treatment recommended by our Pharmacist will cure your condition it is important that if your symptoms persist you seek further advice from the Pharmacist or GP. If you choose to visit your GP always let the Doctor know you what medication you have already tried to treat your ailment.

Not all over the counter medications are available on minor ailments and so the pharmacist will decide the most appropriate treatment for you.
